Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting techniques to gain a dominant postition over an opponent and force them to submit by using joint locks and chokeholds. BJJ also promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger attacker by using leverage and proper technique.
At The Cellar we offer two types of grappling classes:
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
The Cellar's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is taught under the direction of Pedro Sauer Black Belt, Tom Schmitz. Training includes technique drills which are practiced against a non-resistant partner, situational drills where certian techniques are practiced against full resistance, and full sparring where each practitioner tries to submit their opponent. Students train wearing a heavy gi or kimono and are ranked using standard BJJ belt ranks under the direction of Tom Schmitz.
Mixed Martial Arts
Striking is not allowed in spot jiu jitsu competitions, but strikes can be a valuable tool to set up positions and submissions in mixed martial arts. After students have learned the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (as well as Muay Thai or Kickboxing) students can (with instructor approval) begin training in our MMA classes. Our MMA classes are training workouts that teach students to blend their striking, clinching, and grappling techniques seamlessly. Many of our MMA students train to compete in MMA competiton, but it is not a requirement for class participation.
